Jamal Mohamed College was founded in 1951, as an affiliated college to the University of Madras and then affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, when it was formed in 1984.

The College is administered by the Society of Jamal Mohamed College. It is established in a sprawling land area of 87 acres (60 acres in the present location and 27 acres in Veerampatti Village near Bharathidasan University) as a religious minority institution with the primary objective of providing higher education to the downtrodden and socially backward sections of the society in general and Muslim minority in particular. Janab. M. Jamal Mohamed Sahib and Janab N.M. Khajamian Rowther of revered memory were the founding fathers of this institution.

The college was inaugurated on 11th July 1951 by Hon. Thiru P.S. Kumarasamy Raja, the then Chief Minister of Madras with His Excellency, the Maharaja of Bhavanagar, the then Governor of Madras presiding over the function.

When the college was founded in 1951, the Founding Management Committee of the College consisted of Janab N.M. Khajamian Rowther as the founder President (1951-1954), M.J. Jamal Mohideen Sahib as the founder Secretary (1951-1966) and Janab N.M.K. Abdul Samad Sahib (1951-1964) as the founder Treasurer.

Over the period of 5 decades, the college was able to scale greater and greater heights and rise to the present status as a multi faculty institution with 11 UG courses, 11 PG courses and 2 M.Phil. Programmes under Government Aided stream and 3 U.G. courses, 8 P.G. courses, 11 M.Phil., and 11 Ph.D programmes under self financing stream by promoting quality and excellence in higher education due to the sustained efforts and dedicated leadership given by the College Management Committee. The college offers 8 U.G. and 8 P.G. courses exclusively for women as part of women empowerment during the second shift of the college.

Haji M.J. Jamaludeen Sahib, who succeeded Janab M.J. Jamal Mohideen Sahib as Secretary and Correspondent from 1966, functioned till 1973. Haji Janab N.M.K. Abdul Khader Sahib, served as Treasurer from 1964 till 1973. On the sad demise of Haji Janab M.J. Jamaludeen Sahib, Haji Janab N.M.K. Abdul Khader Sahib took over as Secretary and Correspondent in the year 1973 and served till 1988. Haji M.J.M. Abdul Gaffor Saheb took over as Treasurer in the year 1973.

Haji M.B. Abdullah Sahib, who served as the President from 1975 to 1989, also served as Secretary for one year from 1988 to 1989. Haji Janab K.A. Khaleel Ahamed Sahib became the Treasurer in 1989 and he continues to serve as Treasurer till date.

Janab N.M.K. Abdul Kaliq Shaib was the President from 1989 till 1995. Janab M.J. Noordeen Sahib succeeded as the President in 1996 and continues as President till date.

Haji Janab M.J.M. Abdul Gafoor Sahib, served as Treasurer from 1973 to 1989. they was elected as Secretary and Correspondent in 1989 and served upto 10-03-2011. He had distinction of serving during the time of Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee.

Janab A.K. Khaja Nazimudeen Sahib, who has been serving as the member of the Management Committee from 1995 was elected to the post of Assistant Secretary in the year 2003 and as Secretary and Correspondent on 10-03-2011. Hajee M.J. Jamal Mohamed was elected as Assistant Secretary from 10-03-2011.

The college has grown from strength to strength under the able leadership of greatmen who adorned the seat of Principalship from 1951. Late. Alhaji Janab M.J. Mohamed Sayeed M.A.,LT., was the first Principal from 1951 to 1970. Prof. E.W.P. Thomas M.A., was the Principal from 1970 to 1971. Late. Haji. Prof. E.P. Mohamed Ismail became the Principal in 1971 and held the office upto 1985.

Dr. C. Nainar Mohamed M.A., Ph.D., was the Principal from 1985 to 1989. Prof. Haji N. Abdul Samadh M.A., M.Phil., became the next Principal and held the office from 1989 to 1998. Dr. K. Abdullah Basha M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., was the Principal from 1998 to 2003.

Dr.M.Sheik Mohamed M.Com., M.Phil, Ph.D., FICWA., PGDCA., PGDFM., Dip.MA, MBA., M.Phil (Mangt) was the Principal during 2003 to 2011. During 2010-11, The College completed Sixty years of its very useful service in higher education and celebrated Diamond Jubilee of the College with a Maximum students strength of 9625 and 383 Teaching faculty.

Dr.R.Khader Mohideen, M.Com., M.Phil, Ph.D.,M.B.A., was appointed as the Principal from 1st June 2011.

Libaray:

All the students of the College are members of the library.

The library will be kept open from 08.00 am to 06.00 pm from Monday to Saturday in a week. On Sundays, it will be kept open from 10.00am to 05.00pm.

Books will be issued only on presentation of the Library Card bearing the name, class, roll number and signature of the student. In case the card is lost, the Librarian should be informed at once. Otherwise the owner of the card will be responsible for the books issued on presentation of the card. A lost card may be replaced with a duplicate on payment of one rupee.

A student requiring a book fro home-reading will fill an application form to be obtained from the Librarian and drop it in a special box kept for

The student will not be allowed to use the library till fine is paid and the book returned.  Books due on holidays may be returned without fine on the working day immediately following Volumes borrowed for the vacation should be returned within three working days after the reopening of the college.  Otherwise the usual fine will collected. 

No one is allowed to sub-lend the books taken out by him.

Students must, on receiving a book, examine and report to the Librarian any damage found therein.  Otherwise they will be held responsible for any damage that may afterwards be detected. 

Books are to be returned to the Librarian from 08.30 am to 11.45 am.

A book returned to the Library should contain a return slip showing the roll number of the student returning and the catalogue number of the books.

Absence from the college will not ordinarily be admitted as an excuse for delay in the return of the books.

All payments including fine towards the library shall be paid at the college office and the receipt shown to the Librarian.

The Librarian may recall any book at any time.

Strict silence should be observed in the reading room.

Students may, without previous notice, call for books which are marked "Reference" or a periodical for consultation which will not be lent out.

All Foreign and Indian Magazines and Newspapers will be displayed for perusal in the reading room.

The Khajamian Hostel, one of the biggest hostels in Tamil Nadu, houses about 2500 inmates providing all facilities. The PG New Hostel houses 700 Women Students. Besides there are separate hostels for sportsmen, PG and research scholars and M.B.A students. The night soil bio gas plant and steam Plants are setup as a measure of renewable energy projects in the hostel.

During 2003 -2005, compound walls for the Khajamian Hostel, M.B.A. Hostel with 2 stories, Hospital with 5 beds, STD / ISD Booth without service charges, separate prayer hall, automation of the office, Internet Browsing Centre and Bio gas plant were completed.

During 2006-2007, PG Hostel Auditorium, II & III Floor in Hajiani Julekha Women Hostel and Khajamian Hostel compound wall between Samad Higher Secondary School and Arabic College were completed.

During 2007-2008 NCC Obstacle Course was constructed in Khajamian Hostel.

During 2008-09 New UG Hostel Block is completed, The third floor in the western side of main Hostel is completed. The internet lab is completed

During 2009-10 Islamic Development Bank Hostel Block sponsored by IDB, Jeddah Rs.(70 lakhs), IDB Hostel Dining Hall and Mariam Ismail Hall were completed. An additional Bio gas Plant is also established

During 2010-11, Kuwait Alumni Block (Second Floor in IDB Hostel Block), Singapore Alumni Block (Second Floor in IDB Dining Hall), Chennai Alumni Farook Basha Hall are Constructed in the Khjaamian Hostel Campus for Men students. Palani Keeranur Janaba Kulsum Beevi Hall, III Floor in P.G.New Hostel Auditorium, New UGC Sponsered Women Hostel, UGC Sponsered Indoor Auditorium are Constructed.
